The MUNS coat of arms is a declaration and a commitment

The MUNS coat of arms is a declaration and a commitment

New name, same mission – MUNS.

The change of name to the International University of Social Sciences, Medicine and Law (MUNS) reflects a new stage in the institution's development, but does not mean a break with its achievements to date. It is a conscious new organisational and image-building initiative that emphasises the scale of ambition, international horizons and a modern approach to education, while maintaining the unchanged mission: to serve people through knowledge, health and law.

As Heraclitus wrote: ‘The only constant in life is change.’ The rebranding of MUNS is not a change in values, but rather their reinforcement and clearer communication to the world. Our coat of arms is not a marketing ploy – it is a declaration of identity, direction and responsibility.

MUNS is not an American university. However, we consciously draw on the world's best academic models, because good models have no geography. Through prestigious connotations and classic visual codes, we set high standards for ourselves and our students and listeners, aiming for the standards of the world's top universities in the European reality.

The shield – the foundation of identity and intellectual sovereignty

For centuries, the coat of arms has symbolised the protection of values, continuity of tradition and the responsibility of public trust institutions. In academic heraldry, it is not a decoration – it is a sign of stability and the seriousness of the mission. The MUNS coat of arms means:

  • protecting the value of science,
  • continuity of university tradition,
  • sovereignty of thought and intellectual independence.

In a world of information overload and a deficit of meaning, the shield remains a symbol of order, responsibility and methodology. Aristotle wrote that the goal of science is not to know more, but to understand better. The MUNS coat of arms is a visual representation of this principle.

The ‘MUNS’ typeface – authority, stability, prestige

The lettering of the name MUNS was designed in the style of a classic, block academic antiqua font, characteristic of the world's elite research universities. For decades, this typeface has communicated:

  • scientific authority,
  • the stability of institutional structures,
  • stability and continuity,
  • the exclusivity and prestige of education.

It is precisely the same visual code that has been saying for generations: to jest uczelnia pierwszej ligi. Nie kopiujemy form – świadomie się do nich odwołujemy, ponieważ prestiż bierze się z mierzenia wysoko.

Today, typography is as much a language of branding as results, decisions and consistency of action. Authority does not come from decoration, but from long-term consistency between what is declared and what is delivered in practice. Prestige is not a promise – it is the result of standards.

Peter Drucker:
‘The best way to predict the future is to create it.’

Globus – internationality and global responsibility

The golden globe in the centre of the coat of arms signifies:

  • the international character of the university,
  • global reach of research and education,
  • preparing graduates to function in a world of interdependent economic, social and legal systems.

It symbolises the modern model of a “global university”, where knowledge knows no boundaries and the university’s responsibility extends beyond a single country. Immanuel Kant wrote about “world citizenship” as the highest form of moral maturity. The globe in the MUNS coat of arms is a reminder of this very idea.

Four icons – four pillars of a modern university

The central composition of the coat of arms is based on four pillars of science:

  • human profile – social sciences
symbol of a human being as an individual and part of a community, field of psychology, pedagogy, sociology, communication and management,
  • caduceus – medical sciences
a symbol of health, life, rescue, medical ethics and responsibility for human well-being,
  • scales – legal sciences
symbol of law, justice, social balance, the rule of law and public ethics,
  • molecular structure – exact and interdisciplinary sciences
a symbol of innovation, research, technology and the convergence of fields: law–medicine–technology–society.

This is a model of a transdisciplinary university of the 21st century, where knowledge is not divided into silos but forms a coherent system. As Edgar Morin wrote: only knowledge that connects is truly useful knowledge.

The laurel wreath – the ethos of knowledge triumphing over ignorance

The laurel wreath is a classic symbol:

  • highest achievements,
  • the triumph of knowledge over ignorance,
  • recognition of scientific authority.

It refers directly to the academic tradition of the Western world. It is a sign that MUNS is not satisfied with mediocrity, but aspires to scientific and teaching excellence. Seneca wrote: it is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, but because we do not dare that they are difficult.

Motto on the sash: SCIENTIA • SALUS • IUSTITIA

translation and meaning

The red sash of the coat of arms bears a Latin motto, which is the axiological foundation of the university:

  • SCIENTIA – knowledge,
  • SALUS – health and safety,
  • IUSTITIA – justice.

Scientia (Latin) means knowledge based on reason, research, evidence and scientific method. It is not intuitive or accidental knowledge. Scientia is confirmed, well-established and systematic knowledge – the kind that builds a solid foundation for the development of civilisation.

Salus means not only physical health, but also safety, balance and human well-being in a broad, holistic sense.

Iustitia is justice understood as the foundation of social order, law and public ethics.

These three concepts do not function separately. They form an inseparable system of values that defines the meaning of MUNS's existence. As St. Thomas Aquinas wrote: justice without wisdom can be cruel, wisdom without justice can be powerless.

Ambition, innovation and values – the identity of MUNS

MUNS is a university with great ambitions and an innovative approach to education, but at the same time an institution deeply rooted in values: responsibility, ethics, service to people and the common good. We combine the dynamism of modernity with the durability of the classical academic ethos.

Albert Schweitzer wrote: ‘Example is not one of the methods of education – it is the only one.’ The MUNS coat of arms is just such an example – a visual testimony to what kind of university we are becoming and what responsibility we are taking upon ourselves.

The coat of arms as a commitment

The MUNS coat of arms is not a decorative element. It is a public declaration of quality, ambition and responsibility towards students, lecturers, partners and society. It signifies a readiness to set high standards, measure up to global benchmarks and pursue continuous development.

Finally, it is worth recalling the words of Laozi:
‘He who knows others is learned. He who knows himself is wise.’

The MUNS coat of arms is a symbol of such mature institutional self-awareness – knowledge of who we are, where we are going and what values we act in the name of.

Axiological summary

At the heart of every enduring institution lie values that are not subject to fashion or temporary interests. As St. John Paul II said:
‘Demanding of ourselves – even if others do not demand it of us.’
For years, this statement has remained one of the most important ethical guidelines for responsible leadership, science and education.

The MUNS coat of arms represents this commitment to demand more of ourselves – in the quality of education, in responsibility for people, in academic integrity, and in serving the common good. It is a symbol not only of knowledge, health and law, but also of the conscience of an institution that understands its role in the world of contemporary challenges.

Future prospects

The world is accelerating faster than we can learn to understand it. Technologies, work models, social relations and civilisational challenges are changing. The real advantage is no longer access to information, but the ability to see meaning in change and recognise trends before they become obvious to everyone. As Peter Drucker wrote, the best way to predict the future is to create it. MUNS consciously chooses the role not of an observer, but of a co-creator of the coming reality – a university that prepares people not for yesterday's world, but for the world that is just taking shape.

Technological emphasis – the voice of the future

The future of education is happening here and now. That is why MUNS builds its programmes based on modern technologies and the e-LEA platform, which connects the academic world with the digital reality of students. This is where knowledge is transformed into micro-credentials, competency data and a real advantage on the job market. Each skill is recorded in digital ink – verifiable, permanent and globally recognisable. Your development path is no longer a guess – it is precisely described in a competency matrix that shows what you can really do, not just what you have learned.

You study not to ‘get a degree’, but to take action, design the future, and succeed in the world of algorithms, data, and artificial intelligence. At MUNS, technology is not an addition to education – it is a tool for your agency, your digital identity and your professional position. Here, you not only build knowledge, but also a competence profile that is clear to employers around the world.

As Michael Jordan said:
‘Talent wins games, but character and intelligence win championships.’
In the world of technology, talent without digital skills quickly loses its significance. That is why at MUNS we combine knowledge, data, technology and character to prepare you to play at the highest level.

MUNS Declaration

The university's coat of arms is not merely an aesthetic symbol. It is a conscious declaration of the values, ambitions and responsibilities that we take upon ourselves as the International University of Social Sciences, Medicine and Law. We declare that knowledge must be reliable and based on scientific foundations (Scientia), people must be protected (Salus), and social order must be based on justice (Iustitia).

We declare that we are not satisfied with mediocrity. That we aim high, drawing on the best global models, but building our own European academic identity. That innovation is not a fad for us, but a tool for serving people. That technology – from competency matrices to digital ink and micro-credentials – should empower people, not replace them.

We declare that education does not end with a diploma. It should truly prepare students for life, work, responsibility and leadership in a world that is changing faster than ever before.

As Nelson Mandela said:
‘Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.’

The MUNS coat of arms is therefore a sign of commitment – to students, lecturers, partners and society. A commitment to quality. To courageous thinking. To ethical action. To creating the future, not just observing it.

It is not just a coat of arms. It is our declaration and commitment.
